Affirmation

Several times in my life I have had the joy of sharing with others how I know that I am a child of God and will definitely spend eternal life in heaven with Him. During those conversations, I usually share Romans 8: 9, 11, & 16–

9 You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you. 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. (NIV 2011).

Today, as I read through the book of 1 John, some additional verses stood out to me as really going well with the verses in Romans. Specifically, 1 John 3:24, 4:13, and 5:6b–

24 The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.

13 This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit.

6b And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. (NIV 2011).

The primary way we can know we are His is by His Spirit living in us.

John doesn’t stop with that, though. In 1 John chapters 1-5, he also tells us the primary ways that others can know that we belong to God.

We don’t…

…walk in darkness, abide in sin, lie, hate, seek after worldly lusts, deny that Jesus is the Messiah who came in the flesh.

We do…

…practice righteousness, keep God’s commands, LOVE others, confess and turn from sin, confess Jesus as Lord and believe He is God’s Son, abide in God’s love, give to meet the needs of others, seek to do God’s will, walk in the manner of Christ.

  1. God is so powerful that he owns our life. And he has the right to take the life that he gave us.
We are nothing without him in our life. He should be center of everything.
