Are noises and distractions bombarding your life? Sometimes it happens so subtly we do not even realize it. We watched an interesting movie last night (and surprisingly finished it). I say “surprisingly” because it moved rather slowly even for a drama. Our minds are being conditioned to have action or at least fast moving frames and lots of music and sound effects.
Sometimes, especially when I am home alone, I tend towards putting on the radio or something for background noise. Do you ever struggle with times when it is really quiet? I do. But I also know that those are the times to best hear God speak.
This week in the introduction to Nahum in The Message/Remix, Peterson said: “If we are conditioned to respond to noise and size, we will miss God’ word and action.” That reminded me of one of my favorite verses — a passage where Elijah is afraid and running for his life–and God speaks to him.
1 Kings 19:11- 12 (NIV)
11 The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”
Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.
What do you do and/or where do you go to get away from the noise and distractions in your life so that you can hear the Lord speak?
